Thesis Title: Enclosing the Mohawk Commons: A history of land ownership and boundary-making in Kahnawá:ke Mohawk Territory
About
I study the history of land use and land ownership in Aboriginal territories and reserves. I am interested in how indigenous people managed their land and resources before colonial interference, what changed during and after colonization, and how reserve lands are managed today. My research sheds light on the techniques used by nation-states and capital to impose uniformity and linearity on landscapes and to suppress cultural differences of indigenous peoples, as well as some of the ways indigenous people were able to adjust to new circumstances and resist actions aimed at their cultural annihilation.
